Frederick John Smith was born in Kensington, London, on 20 June 1891 and joined the Royal Naval Air Service for hostilities only on 28 June 1915. Serving at H.M.S. President II, he was advanced Petty Officer Mechanic on 1 November 1917, before transferring as a founder member to the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918.
