Walter Edward Cooke, a Shoemaker from Warrington, Lancashire, was born on 7 July 1895. He attested into the Royal Navy as a Boy on 7 July 1913 and was advanced Able Seaman on 1 July 1914. He served in H.M.S. Pelorus in the Persian Gulf, before further service during the Great War in a number of ships including H.M.S, Benbow at the Battle of Jutland. He was shore demobilised on 6 July 1925 and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve the following day.
