James Brown was born in Kilmarnock in 1894 and is recorded upon his attestation documents as a painter at the Ailsa Ship Building Company, Troon. Appointed Sapper in the Royal Engineers 20 October 1914, he was later transferred from the Western Front to Class “W” Army Reserve and returned to his former employer on 17 January 1917 - likely in consequence of the U-Boat menace in the North Atlantic and extensive loss of merchant shipping.
