William Butler was born in Cloyne, Cork, Ireland in 1830. A Servant by occupation he enlisted in the 41st Regiment of Foot at Dublin in 1850. Serving in the Ionian Islands and Malta before embarking for the Crimea, he was present at the battles of Alma and Inkermann and at the siege of Sebastopol. Returning to Portsmouth on 28 July 1856 he served with the 41st Foot in Jamaica 1857-60 before transferring to the 11th Regiment of Foot on 10 August 1860. Posted to the 2nd Battalion in Grahamstown, Cape of Good Hope, on 30 June 1867he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 21 April 1869. He returned with his battalion to Ireland in 1870 and was discharged to pension on 18 August 1871, after 21 years and 33 days’ service. Later living with his wife in Folkestone, Kent, he was employed as a coachman.
