POLAND, Inauguracji kolei Warszawsko-Bydgoskiej [Inauguration of the Railway from Warsaw to Bromberg], 1862, a plated white metal medal by R. Michaux, locomotive steaming to left, rev. legend in 12 lines, 72mm, 126.32g (Döry/Kubinszky 44; Moyaux 387; H-Cz. 7971; Salomons House 66; BDM IV, 65; cf. Baldwin NY XXXIII, 1279). Some surface deposit on reverse, otherwise about very fine, rare £300-£400

Herman Epstein (1806-67) was a Jewish financier who played a leading role in constructing the railways between Warsaw and Vienna (1845) and Warsaw and Bromberg (1857), brokering loans from Rothschilds in Frankfurt. Between 1857 and 1865 he served as chairman of the board of both railways.
