Vereinigte Deutsche Metallwerke AG (VDM), created in 1930, removed to Frankfurt in 1934 and by the outbreak of World War II employed 21,000 people. The medal names Basse & Selve, the Altena-based manufacturer of engines for cars, motorcycles, boats and aeroplanes which, though founded in 1908, had closed in 1932, four years before this medal was issued; VDM took over their site in Altena and ran it as one of their eight factories.
