An Arts and Crafts silver box, by George Laurence Connell, of shaped trapezoid form, the hinged lid embossed with four flowerheads, and the words:
‘GATHER YE ROSES WHILE YE MAY
OLD TIME IS STILL A-FLYING’
the lid with laurel border, the front with engraved inscription ‘C. E. 10th July 1909’, the base engraved ‘Connell. 83 Cheapside, London’, maker’s mark for George Laurence Connell, hallmarked for Birmingham 1908, length 12.2cm.

The wording quoted on the box is taken from the first two lines of a poem by the 17th century English poet Robert Herrick: ‘To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time’, written in 1648.
