An interesting George III silver commemorative wine goblet, of generous proportions, the bowl applied with an oval cast panel depicting a figure commissioning or giving his blessing to a group of three others, rays descending from the skies and with a pennant bearing the inscription ‘Enlightened by Heaven to restore others to health and virtue’, the base with reeded edge, the underside engraved neatly in copperplate ‘Griffin & Adams, No 17 Ludgate Street, London’, by John Robins, London 1792, height 19cm. £300-£400
The plaque may refer to a non-conformist missionary society or a charity with connections to evangelism.
By 1808, Griffin & Adams, goldsmiths and jewellers, were listed at 76, Strand.
