The Kingston & Liguanea Water Works incorporated in 1842; they negotiated a lease for part of the Hope Estate from the Duke of Buckingham in 1848. In 1850 the company acquired over 600 acres of land for £6215; shortly thereafter pipes were laid from the Hope River to supply running water to the population of Kingston. The Jamaica Government bought out the company in 1871. Edmund Levy is recorded as the Collector in 1878.
