Charles I (1625-1649), Coronation (?) [1626], uniface cliché silver counters (15), by N. Briot, bare headed bust right with ruff and ornate tunic, signed n b f below truncation, 26mm, each weighs between 0.89g and 1.17g (Platt I, p. 118, type C; Jones 127; MI I, 243/11) [15]. Mostly extremely fine; housed in a contemporary (?) silver box with similar counter set on lid, uncertain maker’s mark stamped on base; the whole extremely rare £4,000-£5,000
The exact purpose of these medals is not known; Hawkins, followed by Platt, suggested that they were probably prepared under great time pressure for distribution at the coronation, with some worn by spectators.
