Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society, General Medal, silver (To Cornelius Jacobs for Gallant Service 26/7/1946), hallmarks for Birmingham 1946, with silver brooch bar, nearly extremely fine £180-220

‘At approximately 9.15 a.m., a horse-drawn lorry proceeding along Kew Street, Liverpool, took fright and bolted. On its way it collided with a street motorcar causing the shafts to break, whereupon the animal continued on with the shafts dangling behind, scattering shoppers right and left as it galloped wildly along this busy thoroughfare. As it approached the corner of Elias Street, Jacobs ran out into the roadway waving his arms, but without slackening speed, the horse swerved in an effort to pass him. As it came abreast, however, Jacobs jumped at its head, caught hold of its bridle and, though the animal tried to shake him off, he hung grimly on and was dragged along for some distance before eventually bringing it to a standstill. There is no doubt that Jacobs showed great courage and tenacity, with a total disregard for his own safety.’
