John Beal was born at Dunster, Somerset, and enlisted into the Royal Artillery, from the South Devon Militia, at Aldershot on 29 August 1876. He served the campaign in Egypt in 1882 and was present at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir with “D: Battery, 1st Brigade. He received his L.S. & G.C. medal with gratuity in 1895 and was discharged on 12 July 1897. Sold with copy discharge papers.
