Three: Private S. Clarke, Grenadier Guards

Samuel Clarke, a farmer from Walton-by-Kimcote, Leicestershire, attested for service in the Grenadier Guards on 10 December 1914, aged 19 years, 11 months. He entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 26 July 1915, returning to England on 2 October, having a suffered a gunshot wound to the right leg on 27 September. Making a full recovery, he returned to France on 14 April 1916 only to suffer shell shock on 3 July resulting in a return to England on 7 July. Restored to health, he again returned to France on 10 November 1917, returning home on 21 September 1918, possibly due to a gun shot wound to the hip received on 25 August. Lucky to survive these and other wounds, Clarke was transferred to the Army Reserve on 18 February 1919 and fully demobilized on 31 March 1920.
