Walter Edward Allen was born at Cromer, Norfolk, in January 1887 and joined the Royal Naval Air Service (Armoured Car Detachment) as a Petty Officer Mechanic in November 1915. Embarked for Russia at the end of the same year, he returned to the U.K. in March 1916, but rejoined his unit in Russia that June, his official record of service giving his subsequent postings as follows (see ADM 116 1717):

‘August-September 1916: on detached service. Kars; November-December: on detached service in Dobrudsha. Hirsova; December: on detached service at Main Base, Odessa; 16 July 1917: left Tiraspol Base for service in Galicia. Proskorov; 13 September: left Proskorov Base for Kursk; 10 October: awarded Silver Breast Medal with Stanislaus ribbon for hard work; 12 November: arrived in England; 18 January 1918: transferred to M.G. Corps.’

His
MIC entry verifies his sole entitlement to the British War and Victory Medals, as does the equivalent R.N. roll (ADM. 171/94).
