Sidney Herbert Carter was born in Co. Antrim on 14 March 1848. After qualifying as a B.A., M.D. and T.C.D. he entered the Army Medical Department as a Surgeon on 30 September 1874. As such, he served in the Afghan War of 1878-80, being present at Ahmed Khel, and in the Egypt War of 1882, being present at Tel-el-Kebir. He was promoted to Surgeon-Major in September 1886 and Surgeon Lieutenant-Colonel in September 1894. His next service was with the Tirah Expeditionary Force on the Lines of Communication. Service in the Boer War followed. He was Senior Medical Officer, Infantry Division, Natal Field Force and afterwards P.M.O. of Division at the Defence of Ladysmith where he held the local rank of Colonel and was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 23 March 1900 [Sir G. S. White] and 9 November 1900 [Sir R. H. Buller]). His later services in the war earned him a third mention (London Gazette 8 February 1901).
