India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Pegu (Q. Mr. Serjt. Wm. Maloney, 80th Regt.) signs of brooch mounting, contact marks, slight edge bruising, nearly very fine £160-200

William Maloney attested for the 80th Regiment on 14 October 1839, aged 18 years. Serving many years abroad, he landed in New South Wales in February 1841, being promoted Corporal in March 1842 and Sergeant in May 1843. Posted to India in 1844, the ship carrying him was wrecked on one of the islands of the Andamam Archipelago on 12 November 1844; Maloney finally reaching the shores of India on 17 January 1845. Serving with his regiment in the Sutlej War 1845-46, he was present at the battles of Moodkee, Ferozeshuhur and Sobraon, being appointed Colour Sergeant in November 1845. Promoted to Quarter Master Sergeant in April 1852, he then served in the Burma War of 1852-53 and was present at the capture of Martaban, 5 April 1852, the bombardment and capture of Rangoon, 14 April 1852, the capture and occupation of Prome, 9 October 1852 and the night attack at Prome, 8 December 1852. Maloney was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal with an annuity of £10 shortly before being commissioned as Quarter Master in the 80th Regiment on 23 October 1855. With the regiment he saw service in the Indian Mutiny, being present at Hurra, Simree, Bera, Doondeakeira and Bussingpore. Transferred to the 6th Regiment in 1863, he is recorded as a Military Knight of Windsor in 1884 - one of only two Quartermasters on Retired Pay. Sold with copied record of service.
