George Lindsay Malcolm Leckie joined the Navy as a Cadet in 1865, being promoted Sub Lieutenant in 1870 and Lieutenant in 1874. He was First Lieutenant of the Tyne during the naval and military operations in the Eastern Soudan at Suakin, 1884-85. Leckie won the Royal Humane Society Medal for jumping into shark-infested seas off San Blas, West coast of Mexico, to save the life of Ordinary Seaman W. J. Davis who had fallen overboard. He was promoted to Commander in 1889 and Captain Retired in 1899.
