James William Anderson was born at Alverstoke, Hampshire, on 13 February 1858, and entered the Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 3 January 1874. As Captain of the Mizzen Top aboard H.M.S. Sultan, he was present at the bombardment of Alexandria, and as Captain of the Forecastle abouard H.M.S. Carysfort, he was present at Suakin and Tofrek. He received his L.S. & G.C. on 10 May 1886, as a Petty Officer 1st Class serving in H.M.S. Excellent, but he was for some reason “Deprived” of this medal on 31 December 1890. Whatever the reasons for the forfeit of his medal he seems to have made good and was awarded another L.S. & G.C. medal on 9 March 1896, once again in Excellent but now Acting Chief Petty Officer. He became Chief Petty Officer in May 1896 and was discharged overage on 13 January 1908. Sold with copy service record and two original certificates of qualification, in Seamanship (1889) and Gunnery (1890).
