Samuel James Rennie was born at Ecclesall, Yorkshire on 2 April 1855. He was appointed a Surgeon in the Army Medical Service in July 1881, Surgeon-Major in July 1893, Lieutenant-Colonel in July 1901, and placed on Retired Pay in 1903. In 1908 he was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel and Honorary Colonel of the United Provinces Horse; being the first Colonel of the newly constituted regiment. He commanded the Mounted Volunteer Contingent at the Delhi Durbar of 1911, also the King Emperor’s Mounted Volunteer Escort, and was A.D.C. to the Commander-in-Chief, India. Re-employed with the R.A.M.C. during the Great War, he served as Senior Medical Officer, Chakrata and Delhi, 1915-19. He was awarded the C.I.E. in 1919. He died in 1935.
