John Wood Lowe was born at Pendleton, Lancashire, on 27 March 1839, and served with the Royal Marine Light Infantry from August 1861 until June 1864, when he transferred to the Royal Naval Police as a Ship’s Corporal 2nd Class. He was promoted to Ship’s Corporal 1st Class in July 1866 and served aboard the Barracouta during the Ashantee War, from March 1873 until JUne 1874. He was ‘Shore Pensioned’ in October 1879.
