Surgeon William Fuller Bennett was appointed Surgeon in the Army Medical Department on 1 October 1867, and served in the Ashantee war of 1873-74 (Medal). As Surgeon-Major he also served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, accompanied Sir Frederick Roberts in the march to Kandahar, and was present at the battle of Kandahar (Medal with Clasp and Bronze Decoration). He retired with the honorary rank of Surgeon Lieutenant-Colonel on 10 October 1888.
