James White Minchin was born on 24 April 1827. He was first commissioned in July 1844 with the 1st Foot. Appointed Paymaster in March 1867, he served in the Zulu War with the 58th Foot, remaining on detachment at Pietermarizburg for the duration of the campaign. He was appointed Honorary Major and Staff Paymaster in October 1881, at which time he was serving in Egypt.
