Lieutenant-Colonel George Hamilton Singer was born on 13 April 1845. He was commissioned an Ensign in the 10th Foot in April 1865, a Lieutenant in September 1869, an Instructor in Musketry in August 1871 and Captain in August 1878. He served as a Captain with the 2nd Battalion Manchester Regiment during the Egypt Campaign. He was appointed a Paymaster in November 1880; appointed an Honorary Major in November 1885, and served as a Staff Paymaster during 1892-97.
