Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R., 1st issue (PO. 216843 G. W. Nurse, Mne., R.M.) with slack suspension, one or two edge bruises and polished, about very fine £40-60

George William Nurse, who was born in Canning Town, London in September 1904, entered the Royal Marine Artillery as a ‘Private for Bugler’ in April 1919 and was appointed a Gunner in October 1921. Having been awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in October 1937, he was serving aboard the cruiser H.M.S. Coventry at the outbreak of hostilities, in which ship he remained actively employed until transferring to another cruiser, the Carlisle, in August 1941 - in the interim he witnessed action off Norway, Greece and Crete. Aboard the Carlisle until March 1942, he was present in further Mediterranean operations, and in June of the same year he transferred to the battleship Queen Elizabeth. Nurse returned to an appointment in ‘B’ Company, Portsmouth Division at the end of that year, and was latterly employed at assorted training establishments until being demoibbed in October 1945.
