Charles Gordon was born in Bethnal Green, Middlesex on 15 July 1855. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in November 1870. Promoted to Ordinary Seaman on the Valiant in 1873, he gained the rank of Able Seaman when on the Argus in 1876. On board the Sphinx as Captain’s Coxswain, he served in the Sudan and was present at the battles of El-Teb and Tamaai. He was promoted to Petty Officer aboard the Sphinx in March 1884. Sold with copied service papers and confirmation of clasp.
