Three: Private W. E. Wood, 3rd Battalion London Regiment

William E. Wood lived in St. Pancras and enlisted at Edward Street, London. Prior to enlistment he was an employee of Messrs. Waygood-Otis Ltd. He joined the 3rd Battalion London Regiment on 4 September 1914 and trained in London, Beckenham and Malta. After performing five months garrison duty at Khartoum Private Wood left with the battalion for Sulva Bay, landing there at the end of September 1915. His duties on the peninsula came to an end when he was wounded in the right shoulder by shrapnel whilst working in the trenches. Recovering in Malta, he was then posted to Egypt and thence to France, arriving there in April 1916. He was killed in action on 2 July 1916, on the eve of his 20th birthday, when a shell burst in the trench in which he was working. He was buried in the Hebuterne Military Cemetery. He was the son of Mr W. T. and Mrs A. M. Wood of Woodsome Road, Kentish Town, London. Sold with original medal forwarding slips and copied research including obituary.
