The destroyer Mashona was one of the warships taking part in the pursuit of the German battleship Bismarck. On 28 May 1941, the day after the Bismarck’s destruction, British warships were heavily bombed by German aircraft. The Mashona was hit and sunk with the loss of 46 out of her complement of 190. Tomlinson was one of the lucky ones to survive the ship’s loss and was in addition mentioned in despatches for his sterling efforts on that day. Sold with original (damaged) W.W.2 medals card forwarding box, addressed to ‘Mr T. Tomlinson, 35 Stephenson St., Gt. Gorton, Bradford’, together with forwarding slip and a postcard photograph of H.M.S. Mashona.
