Arthur Edwin Evans, who was born in Port Elizabeth in August 1912, enlisted in the S.A.E.C. in November 1940 and served in North Africa from June 1941 to June 1943 and in Italy from October 1943 until September 1945. He was awarded his American Bronze Star in November of the latter year in respect of his ‘gallant and distinguished services’ in 40th Railway Construction Company in Italy (his official Record of Volunteers confirms); his service papers further confirm that he was issued with a British Defence Medal (i.e. unnamed).
