Arthur Hewlings, a native of Newport, Monmouthshire, first entered the French theatre of war in November 1915, as a Private in the 16th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment. His unit subsequently went into action on the Somme, serving in close support of an attack on Delville Wood on 27 July 1916, when it sustained around 275 casualties.
