Joseph Jones was born in Dowlais, Glamorgan. A Puddler by occupation, he enlisted into the South Wales Borderers at Newport, Monmouthshire, on 19 February 1884, aged 18 years, 11 months. With the regiment he served in the Burma campaign, 1885-1889 and served in South Africa with the 8th Mounted Infantry. With some copied research.
