General Sir Walter Norris Congreve, V.C., K.C.B., M.V.O., was awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry at the battle of Colenso, 15 December 1899, in the attempt to save the guns of the 14th and 66th Batteries, Royal Field Artillery. His son, William LaTouche Congreve, also won the Victoria Cross in the Great War, for gallantry at Longueval in France, as well as the D.S.O. and M.C. Both officers served with the Rifle Brigade.
