‘For the display of gallantry and devotion to duty in the field, particularly on 10/5/18 when the Company was opposed by a large force of the enemy. Although the only European in the section of the line had been wounded he showed great courage and determination in the handling of his Lewis gun displaying undaunted courage throughout the engagement.’
