‘Silver Medal and £5 to Mr William Brown, chief officer, S.S. Brackley, for having, with the boatswain, gone on board the disabled Douro and used every endeavour to save the ship and crew; and finally, while the ship was sinking under them and they were all in the water, after having got into the lifeboat of the Douro which had floated away from the wreck, succeeded in rescuing five of the Douro’s men. Five remaining poor fellows were drowned’ (Extract from the Society’s records).
