Godfrey Thomas Charles St John Kneller was born on 1 January 1843, and had served for some 10 years in the War Office before his appointment as an Assistant Paymaster in the Control Department on 1 February 1871. He was promoted to Paymaster in February 1879; Hon. Major, February 1884; Staff Paymaster, June 1885; Hon. Lieutenant-Colonel, June 1892; retired 12 December 1892. He was mentioned in Lord Wolseley’s final despatch of the Nile Expedition (London Gazette 25 August 1885).
