A contemporary Clerk’s copy manuscript report of the victory at Abu Klea, on official paper, dated Korti 22 Jan 1885, ‘Genl. Sir Herbert Stewart had a most successful fight on 17th inst with about 10,000 of the Mahdi’s Forces, near the Wells of Abu-Klear, which are about 23 miles N.W. of Metammeh & Omdurman, which place had recently fallen into the Mahdi’s power. The enemy charged repeatedly home on Sir H. Stewart’s Force formed into square and were repulsed with heavy loss, not less than 800 of the enemy found dead & the prisoners report that many were carried off & that the number of wounded was exceptionally great. The Wellls of Abu-Klear were occupied by 5pm, a camp formed for thw wounded and a further advance made on the river.’ There follows a list of the total casualties with the names of the officers killed and wounded, condition comensurate with age, folded with losses at the margins and a few holes; together with a contemporary framed coloured lithograph portrait of ‘The Late Col. Fred Burnaby’, and a white metal medal commemorating General Gordon ‘The Latest Christian Martyr’ (3) £60-100
