Arthur Funnell was born at Glynde, Sussex c.1884 and attested for the Coldstream Guards at Chichester in 1906. He was serving with the 3rd Battalion, stationed at the Tower of London Barracks, in 1911 and also served with the 3rd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 12 August 1914, the battalion notably participating in the actions on the Aisne Heights and the attack on Perenchies in September.
Funnell was killed in action at St. Julien on 22 October 1914. He was the son of Stephen and Harriett Funnell of 21 Trevor Gardens, Glynde, Lewes, Sussex and, having no known grave, is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
