The die is thought to have broken before any medals could be struck from it, a view supported by the absence of a reverse. It is believed to have been taken to Holland in 1720 where restrikes in gold, silver and copper were produced, normally on round flans. Oval strikings are considered to have been made later (see M. Lessen, ‘The Cromwell Lord General Medal by Simon’, BNJ 1979, pp.87-98).
