Bt N.A. Clark 1986.
This token, a Ramage production, is from different dies to both the obverse of the farthing of Simon Rutland of Bishop’s Stortford, and the reverse of the farthing of Rob Stadder (recté Robert Stothard) of Hertford. It seems quite probable that the die-sinker had meant to make a token for the grocer Simon Rutland (†1704, aged 89), a Bishop’s Stortford worthy, but instead paired it with a reverse intended for a token of Robert Stothard, innholder of the Black Swan, Hertford
