Reynolds Peyton Hetherington was born on 1 September 1854. He qualified as a B.A. at Dublin in 1876, M.B. in 1878 and M.D. in 1897. He entered the Army as a Surgeon, afterwards Surgeon-Captain in February 1881, was promoted to Surgeon-Major in the R.A.M.C. in February 1893 and attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in February 1901. He was placed on Half Pay in April 1907.
