James Gowans was born, lived and enlisted at Glasgow. Serving with the Cameron Highlanders he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 25 January 1915. With the 2nd Battalion, he died of wounds, France/Flanders, on 31 May 1915, aged 20 years. He was buried in Les Gonards Cemetery, Versailles.
