At the outbreak of the war the 1st Dragoon Guards were stationed at Lucknow, India. They entered France on 7 November 1914 as part of the 4th (Lucknow) Cavalry Brigade, 1st Indian Cavalry Division.

John James McConnon was born in Middlesborough in 1883 and joined the 1st Dragoon Guards c.1903. He served in France with his regiment before returning to the N.W. Frontier in 1919. With them he took part in the last mounted cavalry charge by British cavalry at Dakka. In 1920 he served with his regiment in Iraq.

Research indicates that the above combination of medals and clasps was awarded to approximately 40 members of the regiment.

With copied m.i.c., census extracts and other research. Also with two copied group photographs in which McConnon is identified.
