At the outbreak of war the 17th Lancers were stationed at Sialkot, India. They entered France on 7 November 1914 as part of the 2nd (Sialkot) Cavalry Brigade, 1st Indian Cavalry Division.
Charles Packham was one of 22 members of the 17th Lancers to be awarded the Delhi Durbar 1911. As a Corporal, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 8 November 1914. His m.i.c. records that he made an unsuccessful claim for a clasp to his Star in 1920 when he was serving in the Nigeria Regiment.
