I.D.S.M. London Gazette 18 May 1941. The original recommendation for an immediate award states:
‘For conspicuous gallantry and initiative in the action astride the Barentu Road on 23 January 1941. At a critical period when his platoon was under heavy enemy machine-gun fire, this N.C.O., with the Number One of his section, ran forward two hundred yards under intense enemy fire and engaged the enemy. As a result of this very daring action, the Platoon was able to secure its objective, putting the enemy to flight.’
