Thomas Martin was born at East Moulsey, Surrey, on 11 January 1805, son of William G. Martin, late of the Madras Cavalry. He was accepted as a Cadet in the H.E.I.C. 1825, arrived in India in May 1825, and was posted as Ensign to the 20th Bengal Native Infantry. He was promoted to Lieutenant in April 1828 and, after a period of seven years as Adjutant, to Captain in March 1843. From June 1846 to February 1854, he served as Second Assistant Military Auditor General, returning to regimental duty with the 20th N.I. during the second Sikh War, during which he fought at the battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat in 1848. By 1850 he was officiating First A.M.A.G. and was subsequently Acting Presidency Paymaster, and later in the same capacity to Queen’s Troops. He held this permanent position from February 1854 until August 1858, when he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel. He retired on 11 December 1859, and died in London on 13 October 1866.
