George Walter Scott Bridges was born at Sheerness, Kent in July 1844 and entered the Royal Navy circa 1862. He subsequently witnessed active service aboard H.M.S. Barracouta in the Ashantee operations of 1873-74 but, as evidenced by the official roll, his Medal was returned for alteration in September 1876. Bridges was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in January 1877 and was pensioned ashore as a Ship’s Steward 1st Class in November 1883.
