Joseph Pearce was born at Anthony, Cornwall in June 1845 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in March 1861. A talented seaman, he had attained appointment to Petty Officer status as a Captain of the Mizen Top by November 1869, and went on to witness active service aboard H.M.S. Achilles in the Egypt operations of 1882, in which latter year he was also awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal. Pearce was finally pensioned ashore as a Chief Petty Officer in December 1888.
