Charlie Zarb was born at Valetta, Malta in July 1840 and entered the Royal Navy as a Bandsman in August 1860. He was subsequently awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in December 1876 and witnessed active service aboard H.M.S. Ruby in the Egypt operations of 1882, when he was landed with the Naval Brigade for the occupation of Suez. Zarb was pensioned ashore in February 1885.
