William Thomas Roope was born at Torquay, Devon in June 1860 and entered the Royal Navy as Plumbers Crew in July 1879. His subsequent spate of active service off Egypt is not confirmed by the appropriate rolls for H.M.S. Dryad, aboard which ship he served from 1879-84, so he must have been attached to another vessel. Awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in February 1893, he was pensioned ashore in July 1899.
