Walter Pugh was born at West Hartlepool, Durham in June 1868 and entered the Royal Navy as a Band Boy in January 1884. He subsequently witnessed active service in the Witu operations of 1890, when he was landed from H.M.S. Boadicea for attachment to the Naval Brigade. Discharged in June 1896, he was re-engaged as a Bandsman in October 1901 and transferred to the Royal Marines in December 1910; further research is required to establish the history of the remainder of his career.
