William Charles Reason was born in Portsmouth in May 1874 and entered the Royal Navy as an Able Seaman in June 1894. He subsequently served aboard the royal yacht Victoria & Albert from November 1901 until June 1911, and was awarded the Coronation Medal in the latter year, and, on the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, joined H.M.S. Agincourt, in which battleship he remained until the end of the War, a period that encompassed her participation in the Battle of Jutland. Reason, who was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in August 1915, returned to duties aboard the royal yacht in June 1919, and was finally pensioned ashore in February 1923, when he enrolled in the Royal Fleet Reserve.
